Ask my Ledger answers questions from your own writing, using an AI key you supply. Open Ask from the sidebar, or the Ask side of Search.

Your own key

Settings › AI: choose Claude or OpenAI and paste your key. It lives in the device keychain and is sent only to that provider. There is no Ledgable account and no middleman. Without a key, Search still works — Find over your pages, feeds and mail — and the day page’s Roots band still finds rhymes between your notes with the on-device model; only asking and the flask verbs need a key.

What it reads

Ask is grounded. It answers only from excerpts of your corpus — day pages, notes, transcribed ink, starred and kept letters, highlights, contacts’ connections, and the cached text of what you read, watched and heard — and it says which it used. Each answer ends with a receipt line naming its sources. If the answer is not in your ledger, it says so rather than guessing.

It is a conversation. Follow-ups stay in context, and the transcript reads like a page of minutes: question in bold, answer beneath, receipt under that, newest at the bottom.

Asking

• Type, or tap the mic and dictate. Dictation asks once for speech recognition.
• Ask can act: “make a task for Thursday” or “add this to today’s note” ends with a proposal you confirm.
• Personas — saved voices, one active at a time. Grounding rules still apply.
• Presets — the questions you ask over and over, one tap.

From the lasso

Circle ink on a page and choose Find in Ledger to search your writing for it, or Educate me to look up a circled term — a band, a book — and get a short description and one link, filed for later.

Synthesize

Synthesize is the third seat beside Ask and Notes. The day has a Synthesize page, and it works two ways:

• From the reader. Select a passage or stay on the section and choose Synthesize · 3 questions. Three questions are placed on the day’s Synthesize page with a source gram back to the book, and banked as ideas.
• On the page. Write, then summon. The reply flows onto the page in place, with the day’s gathered material — every text box on today’s pages and your starred excerpts — as its basket. Or hand it just this page.

The Log’s flask button runs a prompt over anything you read, watched or heard. The flask on a Notes zone summarizes it, pulls a quote, or tidies a transcription.

On the Watch

Ask on the wrist is voice-first and spoken back. Through the phone it is grounded in your corpus. With the phone away, the watch can ask directly if you chose to hold your key there; the answer names which way it went.

Privacy

Excerpts go to the provider you chose, with your key, when you ask. Nothing goes anywhere on its own. The on-device model behind the Roots band never leaves the device.
